International Foundation and Wharton School Announce Successor to Long-Time CEBS Academic Director

Brookfield, Wisconsin—Peter Cappelli, PhD, the George W. Taylor Professor of Management at the Wharton School and Director of Wharton’s Center for Human Resources has been designated to succeed Jerry Rosenbloom, PhD, to serve as the CEBS Academic Director. Rosenbloom is retiring after nearly 40 years of leadership as Academic Director for the Certified Employee Benefit Specialist (CEBS) program.

Cappelli has degrees in industrial relations from Cornell University and in labor economics from Oxford where he was a Fulbright Scholar. His extensive background includes serving as the Co-Director of the U.S. Department of Education’s National Center on Education Quality of the Workforce and on the U.S. Secretary of Labor’s Commission on Workforce Quality and Labor Market Efficiency. He has been a faculty member at MIT, the University of Illinois and the University of California at Berkeley.

“The Foundation is thrilled to have Professor Cappelli lead the CEBS program,” said Michael Wilson, CEO of the International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans, which sponsors the CEBS program. “Dr. Rosenbloom’s 40 years of visionary stewardship is being passed onto a worthy successor.”

The CEBS program is designed to test the acumen of benefit professionals. Over 12,000 benefits professionals have earned their CEBS designation by completing a curriculum covering group health benefits, retirement plans, strategic HR and compensation.  In the U.S., CEBS is co-sponsored by the International Foundation and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. In Canada, Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia co-sponsors the program.

Rosenbloom, Frederick H. Ecker Professor Emeritus of Insurance and Risk Management at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, has been involved with the CEBS program since its inception in the mid-1970s. His work helped establish and grow the designation, which continues to be a highly sought-after credential within the employee benefit industry and the human resources community. Rosenbloom was also instrumental in the 1980 launch of the Canadian CEBS Program, which is under the academic leadership of Dalhousie University. A prolific author, Dr. Rosenbloom’s most notable works include co-authoring Retirement Plans and Private Wealth Management. He is the editor for the Handbook of Employee Benefits: Design, Funding and Administration.

Rosenbloom will continue as the Senior CEBS Academic Advisor. In addition, he was appointed recently to a three-year term as Advisory Director for the International Foundation, where he will continue to provide expert advice and counsel on emerging benefit issues.
